MAYBROOK - 1888

Maybrook is a locally significant late Victorian era home located in Kiama on the NSW south coast. The property’s significance relates to the prosperity of the Kiama region during the late 1800’s with the establishment of blue metal quarries, along with the railway connecting from Sydney and the expansion of farming and production in the area.

Originally built in 1888 by William Walker, a pharmacist and surgeon, the property was purchased by Michael Nesbitt Hindmarsh, a wealthy property owner and long serving Council member in the district through the turn of the century. The property stayed in the Hindmarsh family for nearly 70 years.

The scope of works involved rectifying unsympathetic additions and restoring external detailing to original, as well as extending a courtyard to connect with a new swimming pool.

ENGINEERING - CJL CONSULTING

In collaboration with the owner and heritage consultant, an existing veranda enclosure was re-detailed to allow a small bathroom extension. All verandah timbers required replacing including the bullnose to be finished in galvanised steel. Matching ironwork verandah styles were selected to match the existing ironwork balustrade to be restored. The unsympathetic concrete roof tiles were to be removed and replaced with slate look tiles, appropriate for the Victorian Italianate style of the house.

Locating the pool required navigating a tricky cross fall. Stepped rock retaining and timber grandstand seating connect yard levels between the new pool and extended courtyard. Across the primary frontage, boundary fencing was re-detailed to introduce Victorian style steel pickets to improve visibility from the street. A lapped and capped timber fence provides privacy to outdoor spaces along the secondary frontage.

The neutral colour scheme applies stepped tones to highlight timber elements and celebrate the subtle details of the Victorian Italianate style of the property.
